Today is Tokbul with Anam Tulku Rinpoche.

What's it? Anam Tulku Rinpoche is a guru, or Buddhist Lama, and my spiritual teacher.

Tokbul is a regular meeting where we discuss my meditation and stuff.

Usually we just sit on the phone, not saying anything.

Then he says "Thank you so much for calling, Steven. It was wonderful to hear from you again."

And I say, "Thank you Rinpoche..."

At first I tried to think of things to say to him when I called... because the opportunity to speak with your lama can be rare and precious.

At first he would say, "Shhh, you are too smart. Stop all that thinking."

Now we just sit, on the phone.

I love my teacher.

Ok, at the risk of sounding "unenlightened" you call this dude on the phone and then you don't talk??? No "How's it hanging?" or "So what did you do last weekend?" --- for how long? I hope he's not long distance! ;)

C,mon . . . you KNEW this was gonna come from me! hahahaha!

10 minutes...

if there's anything to say, we'll say it... if not, we'll just sit. it's a wonderful example of how we all make shit up to fill space

and of how genuine people aren't interested in bullshit... I think the world wuld be the most awesomest if everyone could make a POINT of just "shuting the fuck up" for a minute!

I know my ten are...

cheers

Yes, I agree with you about shutting the fuck up sometimes . . . I just can't seem to manage it though! It must be a back-East thing! LOL!

i know you've probably read this on my journal but i love it and want to share it again with you..

The Quiet World

In an effort to get people to look
into each other's eyes more,
the government has decided to allot
each person exactly one hundred
and sixty-seven words, per day.

When the phone rings, I put it
to my ear without saying hello.
In the restaurant I point
at chicken noodle soup. I am
adjusting well to the new way.

Late at night, I call my long
distance lover and proudly say
I only used fifty-nine today.
I saved the rest for you.

When she doesn't respond, I know
she's used up all her words
so I slowly whisper I love you,
thirty-two and a third times.
After that, we just sit on the line
and listen to each other breathe.

on my 10 day silent retreat it really hit home how 99% of what we say is just... filler.

And to think that every moment and event in your life leads you right up to this moment. Exactly as it us. Nothing to do or undo.

Sitting on the phone. I love it! lol

he is... the most...

well, as far as these things are measurable...

hehehe

thing is I know he doens't do this to everyone... he just knows to do it with me... never says much to me at all and always seems to be gently dissuading me from talking... even in general situations or interviews or during teachings.

it's pretty amazing...

...that sounds like a good teacher...I have this image like everybody starts with a big mouthful of food, and if you're at that stage, he encourages you to chew a lot, or a little, and then maybe if you'd chewed most of it and more would just be worse, it's time to just see what's going on...good teacher!

I got a real joy from reading that, thanks for posting it. Makes perfect sense to me, I often do the same thing in person, not on the phone yet though.

So heres my experience from a few days ago:

So there is a group of us crazy westerners here in Sikkim getting ready to go into three year retreat with Ringu Tulku Rinpoche in about a week. So as is probably quite natural, I have these "issues" and "real" concerns about going into retreat. So after a few days of festering and growing into full blown problems and possibly "show stoppers" I decide to go chat with Rinpoche about them and tell him I cannot do the retreat. So I am told to come into his room, I take off shoes and bow, and come an sit in front of him. So we chat a bit, and I'm trying to remember what the major urgent problems are, and why I can't go through with retreat but they are nowhere to be found! We hang out for a while, I leave, and the "problems" are solved! Or was it dissovled? I still think about the issues from time to time, but they honestly are no big deal now. Other students have similar experiences, that it is difficult to take a problem to Rinpoche, because once you try to give it to him, it has dissolved and is no longer to much of a problem. Without saying a word, the empty essence is shown.

Its clear that just being in the presence either directly or by phone is sufficient to get the blessing, the transmission, that is needed at that time. I also think, that as our practice improves we may be able to invoke the presence simply through our visualization and devotion. We we will never be seperate from the guru.

Namaste
